Major Clean Power Coalition
July 15, 2010, 11:00 am.
Greenpeace and Sierra Club are increasing their organizing efforts on cleaning up Chicago’s two coal-fired power plants!
Why is this important? This not only brings additional capacity to our now nearly 50 coalition-partner efforts, but also brings national attention to the Chicago Clean Power Coalition’s clean energy platform. This press conference will place additional pressure on Chicago’s City Council to do the right thing – to protect the health of all of its residents and to lead the nation towards a clean energy future, just like Chicago’s Climate Action Plan promises.
What: Major Chicago Clean Power Coalition Press Conference!
When: Thursday, July 15, 2010, 11:00 am
Where: Dvorak Park, 1119 W. Cullerton St. (Pilsen)
Who: Michael Brune, Executive Director, Sierra Club; Damon Moglen, National Climate Director, Greenpeace; 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore, Lead Sponsor, Chicago Clean Power Ordinance; 4th Ward Ald. Toni Preckwinkle, Co-Sponsor; Patricia Mendez, Pilsen Environmental Rights & Reform Organization; and Kim Wasserman, Little Village Environmental Justice Organization.
Co-sponsors of the Chicago Clean Power Ordinance also have been invited.
As election season nears, the Coalition is mounting a ward by ward campaign calling on Mayor Daley and members of the City Council to take real action to live up to their national image as a “green city”. Special emphasis will be placed on calling out Aldermen Danny Solis (25th Ward) and Rick Munoz (22nd Ward) to stand up for their constituents. The ordinance now has nine co-sponsors. Aldermen Solis and Munoz, whose constituents are most affected by the plants, have yet to join the list of aldermen supporting the ordinance.
